Taking Over a Shopify App: A Rescue and Maintenance Checklist

When an app is unreliable or its original developer is unavailable, establish what you control before commissioning a rewrite. A targeted repair may be sufficient; a rebuild should follow evidence about the current system.

Document the symptom, affected users, business impact and when the problem began. Avoid sending customer records or account credentials in an initial enquiry.

Ask the incoming developer to reproduce the failure, identify its cause and explain repair options. Request a written distinction between urgent recovery, preventive work and optional features.

Agree on a test that demonstrates recovery and on who authorises production changes. A successful deployment alone is not proof that the merchant workflow works again.

Set responsibility for monitoring, updates, incident communication and access management. Specify the support hours and response arrangements in the agreement; do not assume every maintenance plan provides round-the-clock cover.

Retain a concise handover document with architecture, dependencies, release instructions and known limitations. Keep it current when the app changes so the next handover is easier.
