Custom Shopify Theme or Theme Customisation?

Begin with the pages and tasks that your current theme cannot support. A full rebuild is not automatically the best way to improve a store. In some cases, a few carefully scoped sections or template changes address the problem.

Separate visual preferences from functional requirements. A different layout, new merchandising rules and a complex product experience can involve very different amounts of work.

When customisation is a good starting point

Consider customising when the existing theme supports the required store structure and the gaps are limited to identifiable sections, templates or styling. Ask the developer to inspect the theme and existing modifications before estimating.

List the settings your staff must be able to change themselves. Test routine tasks such as updating a promotion or arranging a product page; a good-looking preview does not establish that the editing workflow suits the business.

When to consider a new theme

A new theme is worth evaluating when the required experience would otherwise depend on extensive workarounds, or existing customisations make routine changes difficult to maintain. Ask for examples of the constraints and compare the cost of addressing them within the current theme.

Include navigation, product templates, content migration and launch checks in the proposal. Record URLs that must remain stable and agree how any necessary changes will be handled.

What to test before signing off

01

Merchant editing

Have the people who maintain the store try the required editing tasks using the proposed sections and settings.

02

Shopping journeys

Test search, product selection, cart actions and the handoff to checkout across representative devices.

03

Performance

Compare the same pages and conditions before and after the work. Keep lab measurements distinct from real-user results.

04

Ownership

Confirm delivery of theme files, documentation, access and a clear arrangement for fixes and future changes.
